A Thoughtful Gift for a Half Birthday or First Birthday

From around 6 months of age through late infancy, children experience rapid development in their hands and fingers. They begin to grasp, release, pinch, transfer objects from palm to fingertips, and even switch hands. At this stage, simple toys that respond gently to movement are ideal.
The Mogumogu Drop Box supports this important period of development through straightforward, repeatable play. Actions such as taking pieces out of the box and placing them back in naturally become engaging activities. As wooden pieces touch inside the box, they create soft, natural sounds that spark curiosity through simple cause-and-effect play. The lid features two friendly faces—a bear and a frog—adding warmth and character to playtime.

How to Play
Feed the bear with a “mogu mogu” eating motion. When he’s full, flip the lid over and let the frog have a turn. Talking gently to your child while playing together helps turn simple actions into shared moments.

From around 6 months, children may not yet be able to place objects into the box. Instead, they often enjoy holding a single piece and exploring it with their hands and mouth. This exploration is an important step in development. Each part is sized to be easy for small hands to grasp.

The number of pieces is carefully limited to 10. Too many parts can overwhelm young children and reduce their sense of accomplishment. A smaller set allows them to focus, repeat actions, and feel success.
From around one year old, children develop more precise hand movements such as pinching and transferring objects between hands. With the simple actions of grasping and releasing, the Mogumogu Drop Box gently supports these growing skills.

Putting a visible object into a hole and watching it disappear is endlessly fascinating for young children. This simple experience naturally leads to focused, immersive play.
Connected to Everyday Life
Around age two, as children begin to assert themselves, the Mogumogu Drop Box often becomes part of pretend play. They start recognizing shapes as familiar foods such as rice balls, bread, or sausages, and incorporate them into everyday roleplay.

One side of the box features the Nakayoshi Library logo.

About the Craftsmanship
All processes, from material selection to production, are handled entirely in-house. Each piece is carefully crafted with the same care we would give to a child’s first toy.
We use Japanese hardwoods such as cherry, zelkova, and horse chestnut. These woods are strong and durable, and no artificial coloring is used. The natural differences in tone come entirely from the wood itself, allowing children to enjoy the toy through touch, scent, and sight.
Hardwood trees aged 70 to 150 years are sourced from the mountains of Gifu Prefecture. They are dried naturally for over a year before further processing. Only after this careful preparation is the surface shaped to reveal fine grain and a soft, natural finish. Each piece goes through more than 10 detailed steps before final assembly, and the finishing process alone takes over 48 hours.

Handmade in Japan, the Mogumogu Drop Box enriches children’s play and development. Crafted to last, it is a wooden toy designed to be cherished, not only by the child who plays with it today, but also by future generations.
